Basis Orguna / AKAUCN (Akademgorod United Cells of Neoism,

Probably there are some people out there who want to extent the life of this blog a little longer, and who offered me some more music. Although not all are accepted, I'm happy to announce today the first contribution of deli plain, who has a great interest in Neoism, mail-art and cassette tapes. Here is his first contribution:

"Pregroperativism" was the one-man-movement of the Dutch mail artist Arthur Berkhoff, a person who was both an avid networker and one-of-a-kind. Based in Amsterdam and later Almelo, he was highly productive in the 1980s and early 1990s, he contributed to many underground tape and mail art projects mostly with work that developed his highly individual mythology of Pregroperativism in visual and sound collages. In the mid-1980s, he became a member of Neoism, an international subcultural -ism whose members collectively operated under the name Monty Cantsin (and included other prominent cassette underground artists such as Vittore Baroni and Graf Haufen).

Ripority folio 8, released in October 1986, is the eighth issue of a series of a spoken word and noise cut-ups produced in the typical 1980s underground cassette culture mode of mail exchange and rework of text, sound and image material. Its subject, of course, is Pregroperativism and Neoism, featuring the voice of Arthur Berkoff himself and his correspondents R.U. Sevol, Graf Haufen, Rod Summers, David Zack, John Bennett, Vittore Baroni, Pete Horobin, John Berndt, Sissokou Mamadou, Büro für künstlerische Umtriebe auf dem Land, Stewart Home, A1.Waste Paper Co. Ltd., Mark Pawson, John Atkin, Michael Voodoo, Nunzio James Cobb 6 Finger Club, David Cole, Les Cammer, Al Ackerman, Jack Saunders, Dazar Omahaha, Emilio Morandi, tENTATIVELY a cONVENIENCE.

Three Tapes by Stichting Update Materials

I posted all the tapes I had from this label, leaving three titles that I didn't have, but thanks to Dr. Freakowitz, I can now proudly say that we posted all known tapes from this label (according to the 'Nederlandse Cassette Catalogus'). First there is the tape 'Juli '80' by Martin Hoogenboom and P. Kok, who locked themselves in a room every night and the whole weekend to create music together, using instruments and objects such plastic bags, radio and skrewdriver.
Atmaksis is a free jazz band with Ahrend Nijenhuis and Sjef Poort on piano, electric piano, polysynth, Gijs van Dijk (bass) an Max Brunet de Rochebrune (drums) and their tape is based on texts by Franz Kafka.
P. Kok's solo tape is a soundtrack to something, but the cover is not clear wether this is a film or theatre. The music for all three is rooted in rock, but much more experimental, with especially Kok/Hoogenboom and Kok solo with some surprising elements

M. Hoogeboom & P. Kok - Juli '80 (tape, Stichting Update Materials st 001, 1980)
Atmaksis - Friends (tape, Stichting Update Materials st 009, 198?)
P.Kok - Dergard & Tcham (tape, Stichting Update Materials st EEE, 1984)

Electric Party - Work (tape, Fetisj 005, 1982)

Another release on Fetisj, by the for me otherwise unknown band Electric Party. Here the funky bass is also present, but otherwise is mostly electro pop music, but not with the greatest voice, slow tempo at times and perhaps a bit boring. The cover is nice, and reminded me to tell you that Fetisj designed their own font, which I guess was unique in the day. Electric Party, according to the cover, was DJ Solo (vocals, synthesizer), Leo Low (bass synthesizer), Ed 2 (Bas), Roland TR (drums) and guestvocals by one Monique on one track.

Poltergeist (tape, Dill Productions dill 019, 1985)

Today one of those obscure compilations, the third volume of Poltergeist. I don't have volume one or two and I didn't scan the booklet - I am lazy. But the music is quite nice and has many unknown bands. Included are Z.D.L., Artless Time, Gurk, Extrema Cordialidad, El Pa Dels Probes, Griselda Espinach, Bruno Cassano, Kapotte Muziek, WST, Louis Pasteur, Zewa X, Comando Bruno, Dieti & The Dietis, Trigger B, Sam Gorki, For Beast And Beauty and S. Necronomicon - Messenger Of The Dark (tape, Fetisj 001, 1981)

Back in the day I heard of the Fetisj label from Amsterdam, but I never heard any of them, so when Dr. Freakowitz mailed me this release I was quite happy. He also said that it didn't hold up in time, just as many of the 'funksters' of those days, and while I think that is only partly true, Necronomicon is indeed a bit dull. I think the reason is that the pieces are a bit too long. Necronomicon was Vache (voice), Gerhard V. (synthesizer), Judyteen (drum synthesizer) and Young Boy Wonder (bass synthesizer).

Is That You Santa Claus (tape, Noel 3, 1986)

By my own counting this blog won't make it until christmas 2009. I post only stuff I ripped myself (not necessarily things I own, as you will soon experience, as I borrowed a bunch of great Dutch punk records) or by my trusted Dr. Freakowitz, and not stuff I found on Soulseek, simply because I don't seek soul. So I worked a bit in advance, having transferred most of my tapes and some more records, plus whatever I borrowed, I'd say we're done in 5 months. Maybe a bit more. But christmas? No. Ok, that means that on this boxing day, I have to do the final christmas tape by Oscar Smit from 1986, with Video Aventures, De Fabriek, Atrox & F.P. & The Doubling Riders, Mission Papua Holland, Edward Ka-spel, Betty Arden, Gen Ken, The Misz, Etienne Brunet & Jeanpierre Bedoyan and Granmaster O again. Thanks to Dr. Freakowitz.

Oscar's X-Mas Carols 1984 (tape, Noel 1, 1984)

'Happy Christmas, although you don't care' wrote Dr. Freakowitz, and once again, he was right. I don't care, but like last I am posting a christmas tape compiled by Oscar Smit, once from the magazine Vinyl and the man with absolute knowledge on cassettes in 1980s. This is was the first issue he did in 1984, and he had friends in high places, as it has music by Van Kaye & Ignit, Legendary Pink Dots, Stratis, Pascal Comelade, Det Wiehl, Utilisation Du Vieux Port, Geluidshouwerij, Anne Gillis, Atom Cristal and the excellent, excellent piece by Ende Shneafliet, plus some more 'assorted scratching and soundpieces by Grandmaster O. Thanks to Dr. Freakowitz.

Throw Me Your Finger - Les Chansons De La Vie Perdue (tape, Finger In The Dike hole 0167, 198?)

I posted a tape by them before, and I think this one is their first full length by them, and it includes 'Bruckners Hip-hop', although judging by the catalogue number it came after 'Eleven Chants From Heaven'. Oh well, I don't know. Still quite industrial, with vocals. Dr. Freakowitz, who sent this, compared some with Bourbonese Qualk - quite right.

Big City Orchestra - Our Life In The Bush Of Kate (tape, Ubuibi, 19??)

From Discogs: "One of the most idiosyncratic and original groups of the past two decades, BCO is not your standard Orchestra. Situated in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the band has released an enormous catalog of recorded material over the past two decades. Formed in the late 1970's the ensemble continues to maintain a free-flowing roster of artists from around the world that collaborate on specific projects. Categorizing the Orchestra into any given genre can be a task, as releases continue to surprise even the most devout listener. There is never any way to precisely classify the next BCO release. An album of authentic sea-shanties? A wall of noise? A shimmering downpour of lullabies whispered to the wind? A humorous or thought-provoking album of Sound Collages? Vocal excursions set to make Rod McKuen blush? We press play, leaning forward with slight apprehension. We await the first wave of blissful deception. We are perpetually rewarded."
Much to my own surprise, this is one of the few Big City Orchestra tapes I have. I am not sure if I did the index right.

Stem Band Vol. 1 (tape, Stichting Electronische Music, 1985)

I have no idea how official the Stichting Electronische Muziek (short: Stem, which also means voice) was, and if they really had a studio, or perhaps it was a bunch of guys with synthesizers. Just first names here, Rob, Jan and Coen, playing solo and various combinations. And various pieces of electronic music is the result, from poppy to minimal to cosmic.

Royal Flush - Tri(the)-Angle (tape, Black Death, 1990), Square Fields (tape, Black Death, 1990)

More music by Bart Hanselaar, this time the two tapes he released as Royal Flush. Not as noise based as Black Wound, or as ambient as Recycled Body Programm, but certainly quite nice electro-acoustic music. It seems to be based on electro-acoustic samples which are treated with sound effects.

Cancel - Music From Another Dimension (tape, Brains For Breakfast 005, 1988)

I remembered that Cancel had a nice track on one of those IF Records compilations, so I made a digital copy of their cassette, but perhaps I shouldn't. Its pretty dull, almost symphonic rock music by Ben (guitars), Charley (voice), Mark (keyboards) and Marleen (drums). The band was from Zwolle, The Netherlands. But since I did the transformation to mp3, I thought I better post and let you decide yourself.

Szarkov & Mario Marzidovsek - Live (tape, De Koude Oorlog, 1987)

I posted something by Szarkov before, and said I didn't know much about this band, but now that I studied this cover, I see the line up mentioned: Dick de Booij (vocals, percussion, keyboards, tapes), H.P. Flohr (bas), Richard Maipauw (flute, anklung, guitar), Michel Alders (drums, percussion, metallurgia), Marc 'A' (guitar, percussion) and Raymond Coster (guitar). This tape contains a live recording from 1987 at Gallerie 33 in Den Helder and also a live piece by Mario Marzidovsek. What ever happened to him? Anyone knows?

Unfortunately my Dutch punk project died a slow death. I have some more stuff, but in every case there is something lacking, usually things like a cover. Too bad. If I find them, and have things complete I will post them. Not much punk on cassette, but I have some (a great compilation coming soon, if I have time to scan the booklet, grrrr-jn you must wait), and things one. I have not much clue about Alternative Buttons, but they seem from Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Not y'r typical Dutch punk band, but still quite alright.

Angst & Danny van Looy - De Weg Naar De Hel (GBC 08, 19??), Madam Desmet - Molensteen (GBC 09, 19??)

The man behind Angst is Erik Vloeberghs, who ran the Gezonde Boerse Copulaties (Healthy Boorish Copulations) label, and whose main band was Angst. He also was part of Kwajongens In Bloei, The Parts (with the duo Club Moral) and also a writer. His stenciled and xeroxed books are great, nonsensical and wise. Pick your choose. Much of his stuff is available for download from here but some the labels releases aren't, such as 'De Weg Naar De Hel' (the road to hell), which he recorded with the otherwise for me unknown Danny van Looy. Sound collages, taped family conversations, and instrumental parts. Nice one. On the same label also a shorter release by one Madam Desmet. I have no idea who she is, but on the Club Moral it is said of this tape "literary ramblings of a local visionary", so included as a joke here. All of the Angst and Kwajongens tapes are highly recommended.

Feesticksz!! (tape, Glasbakassettes 001, 1982)

Maybe its by now a returning story, a broken record, but I really know nothing about the Feesticksz!!. Its one of those I bought at the time, for the listed six guilders (3 euros now), which seemed cheap. According to the 'Nederlandse Cassette Catalogus', there were two other releases on this label, which I never heard. It also says that that this tape is called 'First Musical Efforts', but it's not mentioned on the cover. The label was from the small village Koudekerke and the music is post punk experimental and electronic. Quite nice, still!

After I uploaded my Z'EV thing, I saw that on The Thing On The Doorstep there is the great Z'EV 7" 'Wipe Out' so I'd say be sure to get that too! In 'One Foot In The Grave', Z'EV writes: "Andrew and Z'EV at the black boxes. This was actually our first 'in person; work together - just before the Open In Obscurity material was assembled. Q#1 was the only piece for multiple players ever released, and used the Apollohuis unstallation and O.D. Studios phase relation to outstanding effect. The rest featured fragments from the past, reprocessed digitally. It also featured a completely reconstructed composition of Z'EV by Andrew while I lay sick upstairs'. 'Headlines Of Today' contains mainly electronic music in that free style we expect from him, and its quite nice. Pavl Mahv is one Paul Mahu, who was connected to the Baader Popgruppe, which we posted more than a year ago and Vovokai, also posted last year. Now that I have a new cassette player, I'd thought I better give this another spin, as my previous deck didn't like the tape, but this one sounds much better. Apparently Mahu spent some time in a youth prison where this tape was compiled and has music by himself and Danny Bosten (of Das Ding fame) as Auschwitch Im Sommer, The Dying Fascist Symphony, Guys From State Prison, Marlboro Index, Baader Pop Gruppe, Pavl Mahv/Vovokai, Iglo 5808 and Angry Young Men.
